Title: Soul Without a Boy
Genre: YA urban fantasy
On his thirteenth lap around the block, London Howell ripped off the advertisement stapled to his neighbor's fence. There were only so many times he could read about City of London tourism before he got irrationally paranoid.
Dad used to say that naming him after the city they lived in had been a spur of the moment thing. To London, that meant Dad had looked around the hospital room, spotted a similar sign and thought, Sure, why not? He tried not to criticize. It could have been worse. He could be named Liverpool.
Fun opening! I like the tone & the voice. And I love the title! :)
ReplyDeleteLove the cheeky voice and the fun name! I'd read on. :o)
ReplyDeleteI like this, but I'm just wondering why he'd be paranoid. This is YA so this guy's gotta be around 16. After 16 years you'd think this guy would be fine with his name and be used to seeing posters for the city he lives in. I just don't get the paranoia.
ReplyDeleteI've read the first 250 words. Still love this. :D
ReplyDeleteI read your 250 words and I still love it too. Great beginning!
ReplyDeleteGood start. The opening line reminded me of the first sentence of 1984. I love the humor of the ending sentence. I would like to see a hint of the fantastic early on, but I know 100 words is only a tiny bite.
ReplyDeleteI love the humor in this. Great hook and smooth writing. Good job!

So, great title and a bonus having a male mc. Good gob!
ReplyDeleteI'd read it just to find out why the kid was running around his hood so many times. I, too, love the title, and the humor.
ReplyDeleteI think this sounds great! I love the voice and the humor. I do wonder why he's paranoid though.
