Elana's (compelling characters) list I thought to myself, what can I contribute to the conversation? I don't have a book (yet). I'm not agented (yet). What do I bring to the table? I decided I bring experiences to the table...and what do characters need? They need experiences. They must have suffered highs and lows. They must have loved and lost. They must have won and been beat... All of your character's experiences may not make it into the final manuscript or book, but defining them helps you develop their character. :)
Just for fun I thought I'd give you a little bit of someone's life:
"Knowing that he had been a loving father to her was hard. It made me want to leave, but I knew I had to stay and give him a chance to be a father to me, even if it was twenty years too late..."
Watch the world around you, listen to the people around you and take notes...You never know when you might want to use them.
Do you listen in on conversations? Do you keep notes?
