BRUSSLES SPROUTS...

Every once and a while you have to try something new…

As a kid, I never did like Brussels Sprouts, but I ate them. All good English children eat their Brussels Sprouts... Last week I was watching one of those cooking shows on the Food Channel and they were cooking Brussels Sprouts. I thought hmmm, that sounds a lot better than boiling them in water till they are soft (soggy).

I adapted the recipe a bit...Boil the Brussels Sprouts for four minutes. Sauté in olive oil (small amount) with sea salt and chopped garlic (to taste) for five minutes.

The thing that surprised me the most (other than that I liked them) was the color they turned. They were a brilliant green.

Have you tried anything new lately? Food? Trip? Writing? (Whatever...) Please share.

  1. Yum, that sounds really good. I haven't tried anything new for a while. This post reminds me that I should. :)

  2. that sounds delicious! I think I'll try making them that way. My mom always boiled them. I still like them boiled but I'm sure I'd like this a lot better!

  3. I am a very sneaky eater. And to be honest, my diet isn't all that exciting. When it comes to food, I'm not all that daring.
Not the case with other stuff. I'm trying to learn how to golf. That's fairly new. I figured now that the kids are getting older and need us less, my husband and I should find something to do together, besides...And so, we've taken up golf. Except that we pretty much, totally suck at it. We don't even keep score. But, hey, we enjoy getting out there and trying. And the best part is ending up in the 19th hole with a refreshing drink. (Smiles) Seriously though, I'm a runner. And golf, well, it's like totally different. It takes an enormous amount of patience. The golf pro tries to get me to slow down. He says it has a lot to do with your personality and he had me pegged correctly from the beginning. Anyway, it's new and I'm trying even though I swear those little white balls hate me.

  4. Brussels Sprouts cooked that way actually do sound good. I can't think of one new thing I've tried lately - I feel so boring. I am thinking about writing a book review for my blog which would be very new for me and I'm not even sure if I'll post it, I'll have to see how it turns out.

  5. We occasionally have brussels sprouts, but only because my husband likes them. I choke just one down to show my kids that even I will try something I don't like each time it is served. :) Then they have to have a bite.
Maybe we will try cooking it your way though.

  6. You're totally not going to believe this, but I tried brussel sprouts for the first time a few weeks ago. AND (more amazing) it was my 14 year old's idea! We boiled them for like a minute then fried them in olive oil with bacon and onion (or maybe it was garlic, it's all a little fuzzy right now). Bottom line, they were GOOD!

  7. Yup. Tried Kangaroo sausage and tried camel sausage. Both were good!!!!

  8. Oh I found this absolutely lovely brussels sprout recipe over x-mas! No need to par-boil these lovelies. Just trim and chop in half and sautee for a few minutes. Surprisingly they soften and you can add seasonings of your choice. Lovely. I love brussels sprouts when not boiled to death!
    :-)

    Hmm I'm hungry!
    Take care

  9. My blog is relatively new, 4 months old, and I just kind of fell into it; it has quickly become time consuming and fun, more work than I ever realized, especially commenting on so many other blogs, but worth the effort...I am also single by choice for the last few months, something I never did before and it is liberating and lonely at the same time=not near as bad as I expected though!

  10. I love Brussels sprouts, especially sauteed as you described. Another decadent preparation is to saute sliced sprouts in bacon grease, then top with bacon crumbles. The saltiness of the bacon pairs really well with the sweet, cooked down Brussels sprouts.

  11. Sandy--It's always good to step out of your comfort zone and try something new...be it in your writing, your activities or your food. :)

Karen G--I was so surpised by the color! It was lovely...

Buffy--I could be happy eating pizza and a salad every single day...So I get not being adventurous with food.

My husband and I have talked about me taking golf lessons for the same reason, but we got a Harley instead. TALK ABOUT GETTING OUT OF YOUR COMFORT ZONE! I actually love it. It's so much fun, after 15 years of being totally focused on our daughter for us to have time to be a couple. We've been going on a ride at least once a week. Last weekend we went 150 miles on our trip. :)

Susan--On TV they showed them cooking them with sliced almonds...but I love garlic so I had to mix it up a bit. I'll be watching to see if you post a book review. :) You'll do a grat job.

Kelly--My daughter didn't like the texture of brussels sprouts. My husband was out of town and can't eat garlic. I probably won't do them again, just for me...

Heather--I'm surprised by the number of people who like them. :) Thanks for stopping in.

Vicki--I'm a vegetarian, so I'll skip the bacon...But thanks for sharing with everyone. :)

Jill--You are a wild woman! The most unique thing I've eaten (before I was a vegetarian) was alligator and frog legs. The alligator tasted like chicken crossed with fish and the frog legs tasted a lot like chicken...

Old Kitty--Thanks for sharing! Did you saute' in olive oil?

Jacqueline--You have a lovely blog! It makes me smile. :) I've been with my husband for 26 years total. I can't imagine being alone...but sometimes I wonder what it would be like. WTG...being all independent!!!

Bluestocking--You and Karen G. will have to have lunch together sometime. :) Thanks for sharing...

Thanks for stopping by to read my WAY random post. :)

  13. Brussels Sprouts are very popular at our house too, but I don't care for them, they don't roll very well. I did get a first time taste of fresh tuna ><(((º> for the first time, it didn't taste at all like chicken.

  14. Oh yum. This totally made me hungry. I think it was the picture! And the description of the garlic.... I might have to run out for some Brussels Sprouts. My kids don't thank you, though. LOL! :)

  15. I will never, NEVER like brussel sprouts! Unless...is there a recipe that involves chocolate? :-)

  16. Lenny--Your brother sounds like a really good cook! I hadn't thought about adding onions. YUM!

Brian--You're right, they only roll one direction. I got some out and put them on the floor, they don't make very good balls. I don't know how you made the tuna fish, but it is very cool.

Amy L.--Tell your kids I said sorry! :)

Shannon--Ummm...chocolate covered brussels sprouts...I'm not sure but I think it's illegal in 9 countries. ;)

  17. I love brussels sprouts. They are so absolutely yummy. My favorite way to make them is to cut them in half and place them in a dish with salt&pepper, butter, olive oil and garlic. Cover with a sheet of parchment and roast. So yummy! A lot of restaurants add bacon to them, but sprouts are so healthy you hate ruin them. As for trying anything new, I am planting a garden. Now I kill everything, everything. And I haven't planted for years because I feel so guilty when things die, but here in MA everything is so green I'm going for it. Fingers crossed, and thumbs.

  18. I FREAKING LOVE BRUSSEL SPROUTS!!!! I was so happy to see that you tried them!! :)

  19. Hmmm ... they don't look all that bad. Creamed corn was the thing I couldn't stand as a child ... and my parents LOVED it and served it all the time. I'm quite certain I still wouldn't like it as an adult! :-)

  20. I can't believe I'm eating sea vegetables (seaweed)

    ReplyDelete
  21. Judith--I'm so excited for you! We planted our first real garden last year. This year we have gotten more adventurous: broccoli, spinache, lettuce, carrots, onions, cucumbers, potatoes, tomatoes, peppers, snow peas and purple hulls peas (but they didn't come up). We are so excited about seeing some of these plants grow. :)

Amy--Somehow I knew you liked brussel sprouts. :)

Kelly H-Y--I don't like creamed corn either...it reminds me of tapioca (sp?). I think they key is to only cook the amount you are going to eat. They didn't look as nice as left overs the next day.

CatLady--Do they wrap seaweed around sushi? If so, we like seaweed (around our vegetarian sushi). Thanks for dropping in. I'm off to check out your blog. :)

  22. Nope I am sorry to report I have not tried anything new... but now I will go out of my way to try something.

    Thx

  23. Jeff--Sometime it just takes someone different saying it...I'm glad I've inspired you to try something new. :)

  24. Count me in as someone who used to hate brussells sprouts. Your recipe sounds really good, so I think I'll try to make some now : )

  25. How funny! The exact same thing happened to my husband--minus the British part.

I'm trying out a no sugar thing all of June. That's new for me, I've never done it before. We'll see if I can actually stick it out! :o)

Have a wonderfully long weekend, Sharon!

    ReplyDelete
  26. Amy--I hope you like it! :) Lenny suggested adding onions, which sounds really nice too.

Jackee--Wow, no sugar! You're not going to ask all of your blog readers to join in on that June challenge are you? I'm afraid I wouldn't make it. (I'm on nutrisystem and one of the best parts is I get a small sweet treat once a day...) I wish you the best though. :)

  27. Sharon, I love watching shows on Food Network and adapting them to my family's taste! You made the recipe you tried sound so simple and delicious that I have to try it right away! Thanks for sharing it with us!

As for trying something new, hmm... does writing an entirely new genre and for a new age group count? :-)
