ARE YOU A MAVEN?

My husband brought home THE TIPPING POINT by Malcolm Gladwell.  Great, I thought, another business book.  Little did I know that once I picked it up I wouldn't be able to put it down.  If you like shopping, commercials, or have any interest in marketing, you should read this book.

Are you a market maven?  Do you feel the NEED to tell people when you find a great new product?  Do you give other people coupons?  Do you know who has what and if it's on sale?  Do you help people when you are shopping?  Are you obsessed with getting the best price and product?  Do you want to make sure that people around you get the best deal too?   You could be a MAVEN...Have you read any of Malcolm Gladwell's books?

I'll won't be  posting next week....I'll miss the fun, but hopefully will be able to catch up on some manuscript stuff.

  1. Now you have me wondering. I love going through coupons on Sunday, and I can lose an hour thumbing through an office supply magazine. Sheesh, I may be a maven. Hmm?

  2. Kathi--I love fiction, so a business book was a stretch for me, initially. The Tipping Point is full of trends in marketing and how lots of how our favorite things gained popularity.

    Thanks for stopping in. :-)

  3. I'm a big Malcolm Gladwell book fan - far more like pleasure reading than a business book or the type of non-fiction that, well, that gave non-fiction a bad reputation with me. Outliers is actually two down in my TBR pile, and your post may just nudge it to the top just cuz!

I'm not quite a maven, though, but do share some traits. Maybe I'll be an outlier? I'll report back as needed :-)

  4. Greg--I'll have to convince my husband to buy Outliers out of his book budget...(Last year I spent about $500 on books, so if he buys it I can read it and not put it on my "expense account.")

The Happy Accident is a great site! If I could figure out how to put it on my sidebar I would. Right now I get it through email.

    I think I'm a maven...I love sharing information.

    Thanks for stopping by. :)

  5. Yes, Sharon - you are a maven! This description fits you perfectly. I remember all the coupons you've given me over the years. I, however, am far from it. I can't remember to bring a coupon with me to save my life, and if I bring it, I won't remember to actually give it to the sales clerk.

  6. I love Malcolm Gladwell. I loved The Tipping Point and if you did, too, you definitely should read Blink.
I also really liked Good to Great and Built to Last by Jim Collins and Made to Stick by Chip Heath and Dan Heath.
    Great stuff.

  7. That does sound interesting!
I remember when the Swiffer came out, I raved and raved to all my friends about it(who all thought it was funny that I was raving about a cleaning product, I'm not the best housekeeper...). I am a coupon clipper, too, but not obsessive about it.

  8. Susan--Thanks...I think...

Buffy--Thanks for the suggestions. I'll pass them along to my husband too, maybe he'll buy them and I can read them. :)

Kelly--I'm the same way. If I think something or someone is great I HAVE to tell others. Do you have the swifter floor mop thing? I love it!!!!

  10. I've not read this but it sounds interesting. I'm not a maven. Not even close. But, I do enjoy a friend who is.

  11. Sharon--if you need any help in the States, let me know. :) I'll spread the word...

Did you find out who Spearman is?

Tess--You may not be a maven, but you are a brilliant writer...Do you have a estimated publication date? I can't wait to be right on your book being an award winner!

LiLa--It's a great book. It puts marketing and how things become successful products into an interesting format.

  15. Hi

Ooooh I may be a semi-not-quite-maven! I like my bargains - I know my sales - but I don't tell anyone because I want them!!!

    :-)

But I do read the reviews of products before I buy!

So maybe we need Mavens?!?! Yay for Mavens!

p.s GOOD LUCK with your MS writing!

    Take care
    x

  16. You're going to jinx me..haha. Actually, I've been having a panic attacks lately because I pulled out the manuscript and saw how much work it really needs.

    publication date is fall 2011.

    forever away, it seems.

  17. Kitty--We definately need mavens! Someone has to pass on the word, whether it's good or bad.

Sadly, I'm mostly cooking and reading. At least I'm reading pieces to get me in the right place for my hf...It's hard to write when you have company... :)

Tess--I'm not going to jinx you...(knock on wood) I think your writing is exceptional and I can't wait for it to be unleased for the world to see and enjoy.

It does seem like a long time, but good things come to those who wait. :)

  18. The book sounds fascinating! I'm a sucker for financial non-fiction. Crazy, huh?

When you get back from hiatus, stop by my blog's 3/17/2010 post for an award!

  19. Jill--Thanks for stopping by and what a lovely surprise. Thanks for the award. I'm still on the road, but snagged some internet time tonight. :)

  20. Enjoy your week off!! And um, I'm a total Maven. I always feel the need to spread the good word. Actually, maybe that's called being a loud mouth?

    ReplyDelete
  21. LiLa--We had a great time at our cabin and in Saint Louis. I'm not surprised that you're a Maven. I think I might be one...I have to share knowledge if I think it might benefit someone. I think a loud mouth is some thing different...(I hope so.)

  22. No,Sharon, I am not a maven. In fact, I buy the same stuff over and over again, year in, year out because the whole idea of shopping bores me.

    ReplyDelete
  23. PJ--I don't think it's just about shopping. My interpretation of Maven includes the need to share information. Here in the writing community we have a lot of information and there are a lot of people who are willing to share once they learn something new. :) BTW...do you buy the same things over and over because you like them? think they are the best? or because you just want to get the shopping done?

  24. Depends on how much I love the product. I am in sales so naturally I don't like to pressure people in my personal life because I do it all day at work! :)

  25. Sierra--I'm not into pressure either...I just like to share. :)
