The ABC's of A Good Friend... "R"

(Respecting the past will bring us a brighter future...)

Today is day 18 of Arlee Bird's A-Z Challenge! Since I write for younger children and we're doing the ABC's, I thought I'd do The ABC's of A Good Friend (and throw in a few random pictures, because I have a bit of a camera habit).

~R~
To get respect you have to give respect.  It's not a given that everyone deserves respect.  Sometimes adults will say to teens that they are being disrespectful and that they should show them respect because they are an adult.  NOT TRUE!  You deserve respect based on your words and your actions.  Age does not automatically mean you deserve respect.  Being an honorable human, no matter what age you are entitles you to respect (You can boo me if you want....but I believe this to be true.)  I want friends that deserve respect...honorable people, trustworthy people...people I totally trust.  Those are the people who deserve all of my respect.

Good friends are reliable and responsible.  If they say they are going to critique your ms in a certain amount of time...they will.  If they know it's going to take them longer than expected they'll let you know that too.  If they  say they'll check on your cat while you are out of town...you know they'll not only feed her and water her...they will hunt her down, drag her out from under your bed and give her a good petting.

I want my friends to be respected, reliable and responsible... What about you?

  8. Resonant. I enjoy being with people who are tuned in to the things around them, who get excited by places old and new, who feel life moving through them, and because of it, dance.

    Best,

  9. I agree with your comments on respect. For sure! Good friends for me are the ones I can be my "real" self around, quirky and silly, and they accept me and let their "real" selves show, too. Plus all the other "R" descriptions you mention, good freinds are all of those.

  11. Hi Sharon,
I respect folks from the outset, unless they give me a reason not to maintain that respect. Indeed, respect should be a two-way street. Actually, I have noted a lot of disrespectful 'mature' adults being very rude to young folks.
I want my friends to be real :)
    Take good care, Sharon.
With respect and kind wishes, your way, Gary.

  12. Respect is vital! I am in total agreement with your post - respect is to be earned. I've seen far too many adults demand respect from teens or kids while they offer none in return. It never works and it drives me nuts!

  13. If you ever take care of Peanut for us, I don't recommend pulling her out from under my bed to give her a good petting. She'll probaly be so scared she'll have a heart attack. Now Piper, on the other hand, that's a different story. :)
